The Story
In October of 2018 I had the honor of interviewing Rick Lemler, a search and rescue volunteer who had served for over 20 years. During the Carr Fire that threatened the citizens of Shasta County, California, Rick spent hours riding his dirt bike to households in the mountains making sure everyone was evacuating. We spent a few hours with Rick on his property where his family’s house once stood as he told us the story of their loss.
I was one of a few portrait artists for an honorary celebration in Redding City Hall for heroes of the Carr Fire called Faces of Redding. In January of 2019 this painting was unveiled for Rick and his family. It hung in City Hall for a few months after as part of an exhibit. This experience moved me deeply. I have kept in contact with Rick and his family since the event.
A note to Rick
Rick,
What an honor it has been to carry your story over the past few months. I have been deeply moved by your character, your servanthood, and your joy. You are kind, you are loving, you are steadfast. The community trusts you. The community honors you. Your portrait has been in my room on an easel for months as I chip away at it slowly. Deciding how I can take a simple brush and some paint and attempt to convey the light I have seen in you. And as it has sat, facing the door to the hallway, passers by have stopped and asked about you. "Who is that man? Why are you painting him?" and I have had the honor of sharing your story and telling those curious about what you are like and how you have impacted me and so many others. I will never forget you Rick. Thank you, for doing such a wonderful act of love. What seemed second nature to you, has moved people and given them a new hope. You are extraordinary Rick Lemler.
With love,
Carling
